What's Happening?
Telkom Indonesia's international arm, Telin, has launched the Puk-Puk 1 Submarine Cable System, establishing a direct subsea link between Indonesia's Papua province and Papua New Guinea. This new cable
connects a landing station in Jayapura, operated by Telkom Group, to a station in Vanimo, managed by PNG DataCo. The Puk-Puk 1 system provides Jayapura with its second direct subsea link, complementing the existing Kumul Domestic Submarine Cable System. The new route enhances connectivity by linking Jayapura to Vanimo, Madang, and Port Moresby, and extends to Manado in North Sulawesi and the United States via the SEA-US cable system. Telkom Indonesia's president director, Dian Siswarini, emphasized that this initiative aims to boost digital economic growth and expand digital access in Eastern Indonesia.
Why It's Important?
The launch of the Puk-Puk 1 cable is significant for several reasons. It strengthens digital infrastructure in Eastern Indonesia, a region that has historically lagged in connectivity. By providing an additional international connectivity route, the cable is expected to accelerate digital economic growth and foster regional and global digital collaboration. This development aligns with Indonesia's national priorities of digital transformation and inclusivity, as stated by Vice Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Angga Raka Prabowo. The enhanced connectivity could lead to increased economic opportunities and integration into the global digital economy for communities in Eastern Indonesia.
What's Next?
The successful implementation of the Puk-Puk 1 cable may prompt further investments in digital infrastructure in the region. Stakeholders, including government agencies and private sector players, might explore additional projects to capitalize on the improved connectivity. This could lead to new business ventures, educational opportunities, and technological advancements in Eastern Indonesia. Additionally, the increased connectivity may attract international partnerships and collaborations, further integrating the region into the global digital landscape.
