What's Happening?
ZigZag has partnered with Trade Duty Refund (TDR) to offer a new service that helps UK retailers reclaim import duties on goods returned from EU customers. This collaboration comes in response to upcoming EU customs changes set to take effect on July
1, 2026, which will eliminate the €150 duty-free threshold and introduce a €3 flat customs charge on low-value parcels. These changes are expected to increase costs for UK retailers, particularly in high-return categories like fashion. ZigZag's research indicates that 24% of clothing purchases were returned in 2025, underscoring the financial impact of returns in cross-border ecommerce.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between ZigZag and TDR addresses a critical need for UK retailers facing increased costs due to new EU customs regulations. By providing a streamlined solution for reclaiming import duties, the service helps retailers protect their margins and manage the complexities of cross-border returns. This development is particularly significant for the fashion industry, which experiences high return rates. The ability to efficiently handle duty drawbacks could enhance the competitiveness of UK retailers in the EU market, potentially influencing other sectors to adopt similar strategies to mitigate the impact of regulatory changes.
