What's Happening?
Chesapeake Mill, a historic antique store in Wickham, is set to expand its retail space with over £670,000 in funding from Cambridge and Counties Bank. The funding will be used to convert the top two floors of the mill into additional retail space, accommodating
more tenants. This expansion is in response to high demand from traders, with a waiting list of over 50 potential tenants. The mill, known for its unique construction using timbers from the US Navy frigate Chesapeake, has become a popular destination for both local and international visitors. The refurbishments are expected to begin in 2026, with plans to enhance the Heritage Room to better showcase the building's history.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Chesapeake Mill is significant for the local economy, as it will create more retail opportunities and attract additional visitors to the area. By increasing its capacity, the mill can support more small businesses and traders, contributing to the community's economic growth. The funding from Cambridge and Counties Bank not only facilitates this expansion but also helps refinance existing debts, ensuring the mill's financial stability. This development highlights the importance of preserving historical sites while adapting them for modern commercial use, balancing heritage conservation with economic development.
