What's Happening?
China Southern Airlines, the largest airline in China, has successfully sold its fleet of 10 Boeing 787-8 aircraft through an online auction. These aircraft, which are over 12 years old, were delivered in 2013 and 2014 and have been part of the airline's
efforts to optimize its fleet structure. The sale was conducted with Bohai Leasing, through its subsidiary Avolon, which signed a Master Sale and Purchase Agreement with China Southern on February 27, 2026. The transaction includes the aircraft and two spare GE Aerospace GEnx-1B engines, with a market value of approximately $532 million. The final price will be determined through an exchange bidding process. The 787-8s, primarily operating out of Ürümqi in western China, are expected to be leased to Thai Airways, which plans to acquire 10 of these aircraft through a leasing company.
Why It's Important?
This sale marks a significant move for China Southern Airlines as it shifts its focus towards larger wide-body aircraft with higher capacity. The decision to sell the 787-8s reflects the airline's strategy to streamline its fleet and enhance operational efficiency. For Thai Airways, acquiring these aircraft provides an opportunity to expand its fleet quickly, especially as the airline seeks to grow following the decommissioning of several planes during the pandemic. The transaction also highlights the ongoing demand for aircraft in the secondary market, despite challenges faced by manufacturers in delivering new planes on schedule. This deal could influence other airlines to consider similar fleet optimization strategies, potentially impacting the global aviation market.
What's Next?
With the sale finalized, China Southern Airlines will likely continue to focus on integrating larger aircraft into its operations. For Thai Airways, the acquisition of these 787-8s will enable the airline to expand its route network and increase capacity. The delivery of these aircraft is expected to begin in the coming months, allowing Thai Airways to enhance its service offerings. The leasing company, Avolon, will play a crucial role in facilitating the transition of these aircraft to Thai Airways. The broader aviation industry may observe this transaction as a case study in fleet management and optimization, potentially influencing future sales and leasing agreements.
