What's Happening?
The Cannes Film Festival will feature the world premiere of 'Next Step Studio Indonesia,' a four-film anthology, at the Critics' Week sidebar on May 14. This initiative, led by Jakarta-based KawanKawan
Media, pairs Indonesian directors with Southeast Asian counterparts to co-direct short films. The anthology includes 'Holy Crowd,' 'Original Wound,' 'Annisa,' and 'Mothers Are Mothering,' each shot in Jakarta. The project is supported by the Jakarta Provincial Government, the Indonesian Ministry of Culture, and the French Embassy in Indonesia. It marks a significant milestone for Indonesian cinema on the global stage.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of 'Next Step Studio Indonesia' at Cannes highlights the growing recognition of Southeast Asian cinema. This platform allows Indonesian filmmakers to showcase their work to an international audience, potentially opening doors for future collaborations and opportunities. The project underscores the importance of cultural exchange and the global film industry's increasing interest in diverse narratives. It also reflects the strategic support from governmental and cultural institutions in promoting national cinema on a world stage.
