What's Happening?
The WickFest girls' hockey festival, founded by four-time Olympic Gold Medalist Hayley Wickenheiser, made its U.S. debut in Las Vegas from February 5 to 8, 2026. The event, which has been held annually since 2010, aims to promote the growth of girls' hockey and empower young female athletes. Over 600 participants and 35 teams from the U.S. and Canada took part in the festival, which included clinics, workshops, and games. The festival featured prominent female athletes, including Olympians, who provided mentorship and training. The event emphasized holistic development, focusing on both athletic skills and personal growth.
Why It's Important?
WickFest's expansion to the U.S. signifies a growing interest in girls' hockey, particularly in non-traditional markets like
Las Vegas. The festival not only promotes sports participation among young girls but also addresses broader issues of gender equality in sports. By providing a platform for female athletes to learn from role models, WickFest helps to inspire the next generation of players. The event's success could lead to increased investment in women's sports and further development of girls' hockey programs, contributing to a more inclusive sports culture.
What's Next?
Following the success of WickFest in Las Vegas, there may be opportunities for similar events in other U.S. cities. The festival's focus on holistic development could influence how youth sports programs are structured, emphasizing personal growth alongside athletic training. Additionally, the launch of an all-girls NHL Learn to Play program in Las Vegas could pave the way for more gender-specific sports initiatives, encouraging greater participation and retention of girls in hockey.
