What's Happening?
Sam Firstenberg, an Israeli-raised director known for cult B-movies like 'American Ninja' and 'Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo,' is experiencing a career revival with the restoration of his 1989 film 'Riverbend.' The film, which had a limited release and was
later relegated to VHS, has been restored by Philadelphia-based archivist Michael J. Dennis. 'Riverbend' tells the story of Black Vietnam veterans liberating a Southern town from a racist sheriff. Dennis discovered the film during his time as a video store clerk and, during the pandemic, tracked down a 35-millimeter copy in South Africa. This led to a crowdfunding campaign and the film's full restoration. The restored film will be screened in select theaters across the U.S., with plans for a Blu-ray release.
Why It's Important?
The restoration of 'Riverbend' highlights the ongoing interest in films that address social justice themes, particularly those involving African-American empowerment. The film's revival offers a fresh perspective on historical narratives and provides an opportunity for audiences to engage with stories of resistance and solidarity. This development also underscores the importance of film preservation and the role of archivists in bringing overlooked works back into public consciousness. For Firstenberg, this revival could renew interest in his broader body of work, which spans over two decades and includes numerous action films celebrated for their entertainment value.
What's Next?
Following the restoration, 'Riverbend' will be screened at Alamo Drafthouse theaters in five cities on April 29. These screenings, hosted by Firstenberg, Dennis, and actors from the film, aim to introduce the film to new audiences and spark discussions on its themes. The planned Blu-ray release will further extend the film's reach, potentially leading to increased interest in Firstenberg's other works. The success of these screenings could encourage similar restoration projects for other overlooked films, contributing to a broader appreciation of diverse narratives in cinema.
