Vernon Hills High School's freshman pitcher, Brooke Gossett, played a pivotal role in securing a regional championship for her team. The Cougars, who had not won a regional title since 2023, entrusted Gossett with the ball in their Class 3A Vernon Hills Regional
championship game against Lakes. Despite initial nerves, Gossett quickly found her rhythm, striking out the first three batters she faced. Her performance was bolstered by her teammates, who scored two runs in the first inning, thanks to a double by junior catcher Annie Zbylut. The Cougars added two more runs in the fourth inning, ultimately defeating Lakes 4-2.
