What's Happening?
Stevie Nicks, the renowned singer-songwriter, has donated $3 million to the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. This donation is intended to establish an endowed chair in otolaryngology
in honor of Dr. Joseph Sugerman, a Beverly Hills-based ear, nose, and throat specialist who has been instrumental in maintaining Nicks' vocal health throughout her career. The endowed chair, named the Stevie Nicks and Joseph Sugerman MD endowed chair in otolaryngology, will support advancements in vocal medicine. Dr. Michael M Johns, a leading expert in professional voice care, will be the first recipient of this chair. Nicks' relationship with USC dates back to 1979, when Fleetwood Mac collaborated with the university's marching band.
Why It's Important?
This donation highlights the critical role of medical professionals in the entertainment industry, particularly for performers who rely heavily on their vocal abilities. By establishing an endowed chair, Nicks is ensuring that future generations of singers and performers will have access to specialized care. This move also underscores the importance of philanthropy in advancing medical research and education. The donation not only honors Dr. Sugerman's contributions but also strengthens USC's position as a leader in otolaryngology and vocal health.
