What's Happening?
According to the GEM Partners’ Anime Global White Paper 2026, Netflix has emerged as the leading platform for anime streaming in India, surpassing traditional anime-focused services like Crunchyroll. The report indicates that Netflix, Prime Video, and
YouTube are the top three platforms for anime viewing in India, with Crunchyroll not making the list. Netflix's success is attributed to its early investment in anime content and its strategy of offering a diverse library that includes older titles, exclusives, and seasonal releases. This trend is consistent with other markets, where mainstream platforms are preferred over specialized services.
Why It's Important?
Netflix's dominance in the Indian anime market underscores the platform's ability to attract a broad audience by integrating anime into its wider content offerings. This approach lowers the barrier to entry for viewers who might not subscribe to a dedicated anime service. The growth of anime viewership in India, from 11% in 2020 to 41% in 2025, highlights the increasing popularity of the genre. Netflix's strategy could influence other streaming services to expand their anime libraries, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of anime distribution globally.
