What's Happening?
CSP has announced the winners of its 11th annual Category Manager of the Year awards during the Convenience Retailing University event in Austin, Texas. The awards recognize outstanding category managers in the convenience store industry across seven
categories: behind the counter, center store, dispensed beverages, foodservice, loyalty + tech/operations, nonalcohol beverages, and alcohol. Each category had two winners, one from a chain with 201 or more stores and another from a chain with 200 or fewer stores. Notable winners include Alex Kupper from bp for the 'Behind the Counter' category in large chains and Jessica Starnes from Weigel's for small chains. The event highlights the achievements of leaders from major convenience store chains such as bp, Weigel's, Love's Travel Stops, and EG America.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of category managers is crucial as it underscores the importance of strategic product management in the convenience store sector, a significant component of the retail industry. These awards highlight the role of category managers in driving sales, enhancing customer experience, and implementing innovative solutions in product offerings. By acknowledging these leaders, CSP not only celebrates individual achievements but also sets benchmarks for excellence in the industry. This can lead to increased competition among convenience stores to innovate and improve their product management strategies, ultimately benefiting consumers through better service and product availability.
What's Next?
CSP has opened nominations for the 2027 Category Manager of the Year awards earlier than usual, with submissions due by November 1. The process will involve selecting six nominees in each category, who will then advance to a finalist voting round in December. Winners will be announced at the next Convenience Retailing University. This early start to the nomination process suggests a growing interest and engagement in recognizing excellence within the industry, potentially leading to more competitive and innovative practices among convenience store chains.
