What's Happening?
Cal sophomore Valentina Savva achieved a significant milestone at the ACC Track and Field Championships by setting a new meet record in the women's hammer throw. Competing in Louisville, Kentucky, Savva threw a season-best 228 feet, 7 inches (69.86 meters)
on her second attempt, surpassing the previous record by over four feet. This performance marks her longest throw in a collegiate meet, second only to her throw at the 2025 European U23 Championships. Savva, a native of Cyprus, dominated the competition with the three longest throws, winning by nearly nine feet. She joins a prestigious group of Cal women who have won conference titles in the hammer throw, including Olympian Camryn Rogers. Other notable performances from Cal athletes included Kai Anderson's freshman record in the men's pole vault and Caitlyn Johnson's freshman record in the women's long jump.
Why It's Important?
Savva's record-setting performance highlights the strength and depth of Cal's track and field program, showcasing the university's ability to develop top-tier athletes. Her achievement not only adds to Cal's legacy in the hammer throw but also boosts the team's morale and reputation in collegiate athletics. The success of athletes like Savva can attract future talent to the program, enhancing its competitiveness. Additionally, such performances can increase visibility and support for women's sports, encouraging more participation and investment in female athletics at the collegiate level.
