What's Happening?
South Bow Corp and Bridger Pipeline are close to securing the necessary commitments from oil companies to proceed with a proposed pipeline from Alberta to Wyoming. This project aims to increase Canada's crude exports to the U.S. by over 12%. The pipeline,
with an initial capacity of 550,000 barrels per day, has already received commitments for 400,000 barrels per day. The project could eventually expand to transport up to 1.13 million barrels per day. President Trump recently signed an order granting a cross-border permit for the project, which takes a different route than the canceled Keystone XL pipeline.
Why It's Important?
The proposed pipeline is significant as it addresses the longstanding issue of limited pipeline capacity for Canadian oil producers, which has restricted their ability to export crude oil. By increasing the export capacity, the pipeline could enhance the economic prospects for Canadian oil companies and provide a more stable supply of crude oil to the U.S. market. This development is particularly relevant in the context of previous pipeline cancellations and the ongoing need for infrastructure to support energy trade between Canada and the U.S.
What's Next?
The next steps involve finalizing long-term contracts to secure at least 450,000 barrels per day, which would meet the typical threshold for pipeline operators to proceed with construction. The project will also require ongoing commercial, stakeholder, and regulatory discussions. If successful, the pipeline could be operational by the end of the decade, providing a critical link for Canadian oil to reach U.S. refineries.
