What's Happening?
The creators of the award-winning series 'Soviet Jeans' are set to begin production on a new period drama titled 'The Last Divorce of Communism.' This six-part series is set in Latvia in 1988 and follows a couple who stage a fake divorce to avoid the USSR's
strict real-estate policies. The series aims to capture the societal tensions and the promise of freedom during the late Soviet era. The production will take place in Latvia and Lithuania, using a mix of archival footage and new material to recreate the historical setting. The series is expected to premiere in 2027 and is produced by Aija Bērziņa of Tasse Film, with backing from Latvian Public Media and other European film centers.
Why It's Important?
This series highlights the creative ways individuals navigated oppressive systems, offering a narrative that resonates with contemporary audiences interested in historical dramas.
