What's Happening?
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of iconic Nintendo franchises, has expressed skepticism about the possibility of a 'Smash Bros.-style' movie that would bring together characters from various Nintendo universes. In an interview, Miyamoto emphasized that while
characters like Pikmin might appear in different series, the current focus remains on the Mario universe. The recent Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which includes characters from outside the traditional Mario realm, has sparked discussions about a potential crossover film. However, Miyamoto clarified that these crossovers are more about adding fun and fitting elements rather than building towards a larger cinematic universe. Illumination's CEO, Chris Meledandri, echoed Miyamoto's sentiments, stating that any crossovers are incidental and based on what fits the current project.
Why It's Important?
Miyamoto's comments highlight the strategic considerations behind expanding Nintendo's cinematic ventures. While fans may desire a comprehensive crossover film akin to the 'Smash Bros.' games, the focus on maintaining the integrity and thematic consistency of individual franchises is paramount. This approach ensures that each film remains true to its source material, potentially leading to higher quality productions that resonate with both fans and general audiences. The decision to prioritize the Mario universe could also reflect Nintendo's cautious approach to brand management, ensuring that any expansion into film does not dilute the core appeal of its beloved characters.
