What's Happening?
ELEMISSION, a Canadian mining technology company, has won the Global Open Innovation Colab challenge at the Global Resources Innovation Expo (GRX26) in Perth, Australia. The competition, organized by Austmine and AusIMM in collaboration with Expande (Chile),
the Peru Mining Innovation Hub, and the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI, Canada), focused on accelerating the development of critical minerals. ELEMISSION's winning technology, the eCore™ real-time ore characterization platform, uses laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to provide laboratory-grade mineral and elemental data directly from drill cores at mine speed. This innovation allows for better understanding of orebody variability, improving decision-making in exploration, resource modeling, and processing. The company was awarded A$10,000 in prize money, international promotion opportunities, and access to business development pathways across Latin America.
Why It's Important?
The victory of ELEMISSION at GRX26 highlights the growing importance of technological innovation in the mining industry, particularly in the development of critical minerals. As global demand for these minerals increases, efficient and accurate methods of extraction and processing become crucial. ELEMISSION's technology offers a significant advancement by reducing the time and cost associated with traditional laboratory assays, thus enhancing operational efficiency. This development is particularly relevant for industries reliant on critical minerals, such as electronics and renewable energy, as it could lead to more sustainable and cost-effective supply chains.
What's Next?
Following the success at GRX26, ELEMISSION is expected to leverage its prize and opportunities to expand its market presence, particularly in Latin America. The Global Open Innovation Colab will continue to foster innovation in the mining sector, with the next event scheduled for GRX27 in Brisbane in 2027. This ongoing initiative aims to connect innovators with industry leaders, accelerating the adoption of new technologies that can address pressing challenges in mineral development.
