What's Happening?
EMP Metals Corp has received approval for up to $3.2 million in funding from Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen) for Project Aurora. This initiative, in collaboration with Saltworks Technologies Inc., aims to demonstrate an integrated, continuous-flow
lithium refining system. The project is designed to simplify lithium production, reduce costs, and mitigate risks associated with scaling up through system-level integration. Saltworks will design, build, and operate a modular demonstration plant integrated with EMP Metals' lithium well and brine handling infrastructure in Saskatchewan. The plant will convert raw brine into a refined, lithium-rich solution, which will then be processed into battery-grade chemicals. This project is part of Canada's effort to build resilient domestic supply chains for critical minerals.
Why It's Important?
The funding and development of Project Aurora are significant as they represent a step forward in Canada's strategy to enhance its position in the global energy materials market. By supporting advanced lithium refining technologies, the project aims to strengthen Canada's industrial competitiveness and secure supply chains for critical minerals. This initiative could lead to economic growth in Saskatchewan and beyond, as it supports the development of next-generation lithium refining technologies. The project also aligns with global trends towards sustainable energy solutions and the increasing demand for lithium in battery production, which is crucial for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.
What's Next?
As Project Aurora progresses, Saltworks will advance the design and cost estimates for a full-scale, modular commercial refinery capable of producing over 3,000 tonnes per year. The success of the demonstration plant will provide valuable data and insights for scaling up the technology. EMP Metals and Saltworks will continue to collaborate to build and operate the lithium refining facility, with the potential to expand operations based on the project's outcomes. The initiative may also attract further investment and partnerships, contributing to the growth of Canada's advanced manufacturing sector.
