What's Happening?
The Royal Victoria Marathon is set to return this fall with expanded programming and a target of 17,000 participants. The event, scheduled for October 10 and 11, has already seen over 10,800 registrations, marking a 36% increase from the previous year.
Race director Cathy Noel announced the increase in participation cap from 15,000 to 17,000, reflecting the event's growth since she took over 25 years ago. The marathon weekend will feature five events, including a marathon, half marathon, 8K, 5K, and a children's run. New additions for 2026 include a title sponsor for the half marathon, a Red Bull energy station, and a charity cheer zone with a sprint competition. The event aims to raise over $300,000 for local charities, surpassing last year's $242,000. The Children's Health Foundation of Vancouver Island is among the beneficiaries, with funds supporting medical care accommodations and financial assistance for specialized equipment.
Why It's Important?
The Royal Victoria Marathon not only promotes physical fitness but also significantly impacts the local economy and charitable organizations. The event's economic contribution was over $14 million in 2025, benefiting tourism, transportation, and hospitality sectors. By increasing the fundraising target, the marathon supports vital community services, such as those provided by the Children's Health Foundation. This includes accommodations for families seeking medical care and financial aid for travel expenses. The marathon also fosters community spirit and inclusivity, drawing participants of all ages and abilities, and promoting mental and physical health.
What's Next?
As the marathon approaches, organizers anticipate reaching full capacity for the marathon and half marathon by mid-July. The event will continue to engage local businesses and charities, enhancing its economic and social impact. Participants and sponsors are expected to prepare for the event's new features, such as the charity cheer zone and sprint competition. The marathon's success could lead to further expansions and increased fundraising goals in future editions, reinforcing its role as a key community event.
