What's Happening?
A free workshop focusing on children's online safety will be held in Rexburg, organized by the Upper Valley SAFE Initiative. The event aims to educate parents, educators, and community leaders about digital safety, device vulnerabilities, and the risks
posed by online predators. The workshop will feature a keynote speech by Scott Pope and include mini-workshops led by experts such as Lt. Dustin Hirschi from the Rexburg Police Department and mental health professional Steffanie Jensen. Topics will cover current issues faced by school resource officers, approaches to handling exposure to inappropriate content, and methods for safeguarding devices and networks.
Why It's Important?
As children increasingly engage with digital platforms, understanding online safety is crucial for parents and educators. This workshop addresses the gap between children's online experiences and adults' perceptions, providing tools and knowledge to protect young users. By equipping adults with strategies to manage digital risks, the initiative aims to foster a safer online environment for children, potentially reducing incidents of online exploitation and cyberbullying.
What's Next?
The workshop is expected to raise awareness and encourage ongoing dialogue about digital safety within the community. Participants may implement learned strategies in their homes and schools, contributing to a broader culture of online safety. The Upper Valley SAFE Initiative plans to continue offering educational resources and support to help families navigate the challenges of the digital age.
