What's Happening?
The Kelowna Rockets have put their special jerseys, worn during the opening game of the Memorial Cup, up for auction. The proceeds from this auction will benefit The Royal Canadian Legion's Dominion Command
Poppy Trust Fund. Since 2008, the host team at the Memorial Cup has donned commemorative jerseys to honor the Royal Canadian Legion. This year's jerseys celebrate the Legion's 100th anniversary, featuring a design inspired by the Royal Canadian Mint's proof silver dollar. The jerseys incorporate the Rockets' traditional colors of black, red, and teal, and include the phrase 'Honouring Kelowna Veterans' stitched along the neckline, paying tribute to veterans from the Kelowna community.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights the intersection of sports and community service, showcasing how sports teams can play a significant role in supporting veterans and honoring their contributions. The auction not only raises funds for a worthy cause but also raises awareness about the Royal Canadian Legion's centennial and its ongoing efforts to support veterans. By engaging fans and the broader community in this charitable effort, the Kelowna Rockets are fostering a sense of community and shared purpose, which can enhance the team's image and strengthen its ties with fans and local residents.
