What's Happening?
Centrus Energy has appointed Geiger Brothers as the construction contractor for its uranium enrichment plant expansion in Piketon, Ohio. The project aims to deploy additional centrifuges to enhance production capacity for low-enriched uranium (LEU) and
high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU). Fluor Corporation is overseeing engineering, design, and management activities, while Geiger Brothers handles on-site construction tasks. The expansion focuses on restoring large-scale uranium enrichment capabilities using domestic technology, aligning with Centrus' strategy to meet its $2.3 billion LEU commercial backlog.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Centrus Energy's uranium plant is significant for U.S. energy security and domestic manufacturing. By increasing production capacity for LEU and HALEU, Centrus aims to meet growing demand and reduce reliance on foreign sources. The project supports local job creation and strengthens the U.S. nuclear sector, contributing to energy independence. The collaboration with Geiger Brothers and Fluor Corporation ensures efficient and timely completion of the expansion, reinforcing Centrus' commitment to enhancing domestic uranium enrichment capabilities.
