What's Happening?
The Washington Nationals have introduced Natty, an 8-week-old golden retriever and Labrador retriever mix, as their new team dog. Natty will begin training as a service dog, with his debut set for May 15 during the Nationals' homestand against the Baltimore
Orioles. Natty's training will be conducted by volunteer puppy raisers Jackie and Laura, who will teach him necessary skills over 18 months. The Nationals have partnered with Canine Companions and Eukanuba to support Natty's journey, which includes socialization with team staff, players, and fans.
Why It's Important?
Natty's introduction to the Nationals highlights the team's commitment to community engagement and social responsibility. By partnering with Canine Companions, the Nationals are supporting the training of service dogs, which play a crucial role in assisting individuals with disabilities. This initiative not only enhances the team's public image but also raises awareness about the importance of service dogs. The collaboration with Eukanuba further emphasizes the role of corporate partnerships in supporting community-focused programs.
What's Next?
Natty will continue his training with Jackie and Laura, participating in various games and community events throughout the season. Once his training is complete, Natty will enter a professional training period to become a fully qualified service dog. The Nationals will likely continue to promote Natty's journey, using it as an opportunity to engage with fans and highlight the impact of service dogs. This initiative could inspire other sports teams to adopt similar programs, fostering a culture of social responsibility within the sports industry.
