What's Happening?
Mathis Preston, a forward for the Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League (WHL), has been named to Canada's pre-tournament roster for the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship. The tournament is set to take place in Slovakia from April 22 to May 2. Preston, who
has previously represented Canada and won gold at the 2024 U-17 World Challenge and bronze at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, is among nine WHL players selected for the roster. The 17-year-old is also a projected first-round pick in the 2026 NHL draft. This season, Preston was traded from Spokane to Vancouver and has scored 44 points in 46 games. Despite an injury that kept him from competing in the 2026 WHL Prospects Game, he remains a key player for Team CHL.
Why It's Important?
Preston's inclusion in the national team highlights his potential as a future star in professional hockey. His performance in the upcoming championship could significantly impact his draft prospects and career trajectory. For Canada, having a player of Preston's caliber strengthens their chances of defending their title, as they won the 2025 U18 World Championship. This selection also underscores the WHL's role in developing young talent for international competitions, contributing to Canada's reputation as a powerhouse in ice hockey. The tournament will provide a platform for Preston and his peers to showcase their skills on an international stage, potentially influencing their future in the NHL.
