What's Happening?
Austin Peay State University and the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center have been honored with a 2026 Award of Excellence by the Tennessee Association of Museums. The award recognizes their collaborative student-driven walking tour project in Clarksville,
Tennessee. Led by Dr. Cate LiaBraaten, the tours were designed to engage the public with Clarksville's diverse history, covering topics such as Black history, women's history, and public art. The project involved 20 students who conducted original research and led tours, drawing 150 attendees and fostering community engagement.
Why It's Important?
This recognition highlights the importance of educational initiatives that connect academic research with public engagement. The walking tours not only educate the community about Clarksville's rich history but also provide students with practical experience in public history and communication. Such projects enhance cultural awareness and community identity, especially in rapidly growing areas like Clarksville. The success of the tours demonstrates the value of collaboration between educational institutions and cultural organizations in preserving and promoting local history.
What's Next?
The success of the walking tours has already led to professional opportunities for students, including internships and employment at the museum. The Customs House Museum plans to host the Tennessee Association of Museums conference next year, potentially expanding partnerships and furthering the impact of such educational projects. Continued collaboration between Austin Peay and the museum could lead to more innovative public history initiatives, enriching both the academic and local communities.
