Meta has entered into an agreement with Overview Energy to utilize a novel approach to solar power, which involves beaming infrared light from space to solar farms on Earth. This initiative aims to power Meta's data centers at night, addressing the challenge
of solar energy's dependency on daylight. In 2024, Meta's data centers consumed over 18,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to the annual power usage of 1.7 million American homes. Overview Energy, a startup from Ashburn, Virginia, plans to deploy satellites that collect solar power in space and convert it to infrared light, which can then be beamed to large solar farms. This method is intended to bypass the technological and regulatory hurdles associated with high-power laser or microwave energy transmission.
