What's Happening?
Original Tommy's, a well-known Southern California burger chain, is celebrating its 80th anniversary by offering an 80-cent chili burger deal. This special offer is available at all locations from noon to 8 p.m., with a limit of three burgers per customer
while supplies last. The celebration includes live entertainment and giveaways at the original 'Shack' stand on Beverly and Rampart Boulevard. Founded in 1946 by Tom Koulax, the chain started as a small stand in Westlake and has grown to 32 locations in California and Nevada. Despite recent challenges, including the closure of its last San Diego location in 2023, the chain remains family-owned and continues to be a regional favorite.
Why It's Important?
The 80th anniversary of Original Tommy's highlights the enduring appeal of regional food chains in the U.S. Despite the challenges faced by many small businesses, including competition from larger franchises and economic pressures, Original Tommy's has maintained its presence in Southern California. This celebration not only honors the chain's history but also reinforces its cultural significance in the region. The event is a testament to the loyalty of its customer base and the chain's ability to adapt and thrive over decades. It also underscores the importance of family-owned businesses in preserving local culinary traditions.
