What's Happening?
Ivanhoe Electric Inc. has announced plans to acquire a Robbins Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and material handling system for the development of the Santa Cruz Copper Project in Arizona. The acquisition
is part of Ivanhoe Electric's strategy to enhance mine access development and future expansion opportunities at the project site. The TBM, originally used at the Grosvenor coal mine in Australia, will be refurbished and upgraded to suit the geological conditions at Santa Cruz. This move is expected to streamline the decline development phase and support the project's long-term growth.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of the TBM represents a significant investment in the Santa Cruz Copper Project, which is poised to become a major source of copper for the U.S. market. By utilizing advanced tunneling technology, Ivanhoe Electric aims to improve efficiency and safety in mine development, potentially reducing costs and timelines. This development aligns with broader efforts to bolster domestic supply chains for critical metals, which are essential for various industries, including technology and national defense. The project also highlights the potential for significant copper production in the U.S., contributing to energy transition and infrastructure development.
What's Next?
Ivanhoe Electric plans to begin the assembly of the TBM in Arizona by early 2027, with decline development scheduled to start later that year. The company is also advancing its project financing process, seeking debt financing from the Export-Import Bank of the United States and other commercial banks. As the project progresses, Ivanhoe Electric will continue to work on obtaining necessary permits and optimizing site preparation activities. The first copper cathode production is anticipated by 2029, marking a significant milestone in the project's timeline.
