What's Happening?
D’Amico International Shipping S.A. has announced a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited for the construction of two new eco-design Medium Range 1 (MR1) product tanker vessels.
Each vessel is priced at $43.2 million and is expected to be delivered in April and July 2029. These new tankers are designed to be highly efficient, consuming 20% less fuel oil and capable of transporting 8% more cargo than existing models. The ships will be methanol-ready, certified to burn biofuels, and equipped with cyber resilience and onshore power capabilities. This investment is part of D’Amico's strategy to modernize its fleet and maintain a competitive edge in the shipping industry.
Why It's Important?
D’Amico's investment in eco-design vessels reflects a broader industry trend towards sustainability and efficiency in maritime operations. By reducing fuel consumption and increasing cargo capacity, these new tankers align with global efforts to minimize environmental impact and comply with stricter emissions regulations. The move also positions D’Amico to meet growing demand for environmentally friendly shipping solutions, potentially attracting major charterers interested in sustainable practices. This strategic fleet renewal could enhance D’Amico's market position and influence other shipping companies to adopt similar eco-friendly technologies, contributing to a more sustainable maritime industry.
