Exmar has launched the first newly built dual-fuel ammonia-fueled vessel, named Antwerpen, marking a significant step in the adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel. This vessel, delivered on June 10, is the first of three
due this year, with a fourth expected in early 2027. The ships, with a capacity of 46,000 cbm of ammonia, are pioneers in using ammonia as a fuel, a move seen as crucial for decarbonizing the shipping industry. The project involved collaboration with HD Hyundai and regulatory bodies to establish a framework for ammonia's use as a marine fuel, overcoming challenges related to its toxicity and corrosiveness.
