What's Happening?
A recent report highlights that Gen Z students are increasingly using TikTok to search for college scholarships. Conducted by the marketing agency Fractl for Sallie Mae, the report reveals that 68% of Gen Z students occasionally use TikTok for this purpose,
with 20% doing so weekly. While 60% of these students found new scholarships through the platform, about a third encountered misleading content, such as non-existent scholarships and incorrect eligibility requirements. The report also notes that first-generation students are 1.5 times more likely to secure a scholarship found on TikTok compared to their peers. Despite the platform's potential, students are advised to verify information with trusted sources.
Why It's Important?
The use of TikTok for scholarship searches underscores the platform's growing influence among young people. However, the prevalence of misinformation poses significant risks, particularly for low-income and first-generation students who may lack other resources. This trend highlights the need for educational institutions and scholarship providers to ensure accurate information is accessible on platforms where students are active. The report suggests that while TikTok can be a valuable tool for discovering opportunities, it should not replace traditional, verified sources of scholarship information.
What's Next?
Educational institutions and scholarship providers may need to increase their presence on TikTok to provide accurate information and counteract misinformation. There is also a potential for collaboration between TikTok and educational organizations to create verified content that guides students in their scholarship searches. As students continue to rely on digital platforms, the importance of digital literacy and critical evaluation of online information becomes increasingly crucial.
