Amazon is set to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to the areas of Markham and Matteson this summer. The drones will operate from Amazon fulfillment centers located in these areas, covering an 8-mile delivery radius. Josh Brundage, Prime Air’s
senior manager of commercial operations, announced that the initiative will add approximately 100 jobs to the existing workforce of about 6,000 employees at these centers. The drones, which are large and equipped with six propellers, will deliver packages weighing up to 5 pounds. They are designed to operate in mild weather conditions and will fly at altitudes between 200 and 400 feet. The drones are powered by lithium-ion batteries and are equipped with cameras to navigate and identify safe drop-off points.
