What's Happening?
NPR Music is celebrating Black Music Month by launching a special Tiny Desk series that honors the legacy of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and its impact on Black music and culture. Starting June 2, the series will feature performances from 10
artists, including Bow Wow, Eve, and Shaboozey, among others. This initiative marks the fifth year of Tiny Desk's tradition of celebrating Black music. The series will be available on NPR.org and NPR Music's YouTube channel. BET icons such as Donnie Simpson and Big Tigger are involved in announcing the lineup. The series aims to reflect the essence of Black music and acknowledges BET's role in promoting Black artistry since the 1980s.
Why It's Important?
This celebration underscores the significant role BET has played in shaping and promoting Black music and culture in the United States. By partnering with NPR's Tiny Desk, the series not only highlights the historical contributions of BET but also brings attention to the ongoing influence of Black music across generations. This collaboration is a testament to the enduring legacy of BET as a platform that has introduced and elevated numerous Black artists. It also serves as a reminder of the cultural impact that Black music has had on American society and the importance of continuing to support and celebrate this legacy.
