What's Happening?
Consumer Reports has conducted a comprehensive evaluation of over 50 insect repellents, identifying Ben's 30 Tick & Insect Repellent Wipes as the top choice for protection against ticks and mosquitoes. The product, which contains 30% DEET, is presented
in a convenient wipe form, allowing for easy storage and application. While effective in repelling insects, the wipes have been noted to cause damage to certain materials such as polycarbonate, vinyl, and car paint. However, they do not affect clothing made from spandex, cotton, or polyester. The testing process involved applying the repellent to testers' arms and exposing them to mosquitoes in controlled environments to assess efficacy.
Why It's Important?
The identification of an effective insect repellent is significant due to the health risks associated with tick and mosquito bites, which can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus. The use of DEET-based repellents is a common recommendation for preventing these bites. Consumer Reports' findings provide consumers with reliable information to make informed choices about personal protection against insect-borne diseases. The convenience of the wipe form also offers a practical solution for outdoor activities, potentially increasing usage and compliance among users.
