What's Happening?
The Chicago Sky has strategically maneuvered out of the upcoming WNBA expansion draft by executing trades with the Portland Fire and the Toronto Tempo. These trades involve swapping draft picks in the 2026 WNBA draft, allowing the Sky to retain their
core players. Specifically, the Sky exchanged their No. 17 pick for the No. 21 pick with the Fire and sent the No. 26 pick to Toronto. In return, the Fire and the Tempo agreed not to select any Sky players in the expansion draft. This move ensures that the Sky can keep key players like Kamilla Cardoso, Angel Reese, Hailey Van Lith, and Maddie Westbeld, while also planning to re-sign Ariel Atkins in free agency.
Why It's Important?
By securing their roster through these trades, the Chicago Sky has effectively protected their team’s competitive edge in the WNBA. This decision allows the Sky to maintain continuity and stability, which is crucial for team performance and fan engagement. The ability to retain key players without losing them to expansion teams is a strategic advantage that could enhance the Sky's prospects in the upcoming season. Additionally, this move reflects the team's proactive approach to roster management, which could set a precedent for other teams facing similar expansion challenges.
