What's Happening?
Eternal.ag, a German agritech startup, has appointed Roel Janssen as Chief Business Development Officer to spearhead its international growth and greenhouse automation strategy. Janssen's role will involve working directly with growers to deploy harvesting
robots and adopt automation technologies, aiming to automate greenhouse operations by 2040. Janssen brings experience from his previous roles at Planet Farms and Philips Lighting’s horticultural LED business, where he improved crop yield and quality using LED technologies. Eternal.ag, which emerged from stealth in March after securing €8 million in funding, has introduced its first commercial harvesting robot for tomato harvesting in greenhouses facing labor shortages. The company also launched a modular crop work platform, the omni-directional Trolley, which can be upgraded into a fully autonomous Harvester system.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of Roel Janssen is significant as it marks a strategic move by Eternal.ag to expand its operations internationally and enhance its greenhouse automation capabilities. This development is crucial for addressing labor shortages in agriculture and improving efficiency in greenhouse production systems. Janssen's expertise in scaling horticultural technologies and international business operations is expected to support Eternal.ag's expansion plans across Europe and its future entry into the North American market. The company's focus on autonomous greenhouse robotics represents a shift towards scalable automated farming, which could revolutionize agricultural practices and increase productivity.
What's Next?
Eternal.ag plans to demonstrate its modular Trolley platform at GreenTech Amsterdam, showcasing its advancements in greenhouse automation. Janssen will work closely with growers to ensure the company's technologies address long-term operational challenges and improve reliability in greenhouse production systems. The funding raised by Eternal.ag will be used for recruitment, product development, and international expansion initiatives, positioning the company for growth in new markets.
Beyond the Headlines
The development of autonomous greenhouse robotics by Eternal.ag could have broader implications for the agricultural industry, potentially leading to increased sustainability and reduced reliance on manual labor. As automation technologies become more commercially viable, they may drive innovation in crop management and production efficiency, contributing to food security and environmental conservation.
