What's Happening?
The Auburn Tigers have accepted an invitation to participate in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) after being left out of the NCAA Tournament field. Auburn, which finished the season with a 17-16 overall record and a 7-11 mark in the SEC, was the second
team out of the NCAA tournament field, just behind Oklahoma. The Tigers will be the No. 1 overall seed in the NIT and will host South Alabama in their first-round game at Neville Arena. This marks Auburn's first appearance in the NIT since 2009, and the seventh time in the program's history. The Tigers' season saw a late decline, losing nine of their last 12 games, which affected their NCAA tournament prospects.
Why It's Important?
Auburn's participation in the NIT provides the team with an opportunity to extend their season and gain additional competitive experience. Hosting the first three rounds at Neville Arena could offer a home-court advantage, potentially boosting team morale and fan engagement. The NIT serves as a platform for teams that narrowly miss the NCAA Tournament to showcase their talent and prepare for future seasons. For Auburn, this tournament is a chance to regroup and focus on building a stronger team for the next season, especially after a disappointing end to their regular season.
What's Next?
Auburn will face South Alabama in their first NIT game, with the potential to play up to three home games if they advance. The Tigers aim to capitalize on their No. 1 seed status and make a deep run in the tournament. Success in the NIT could help Auburn attract recruits and build momentum for the next season. The semifinals and championship of the NIT will be held at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, providing a prestigious stage for the final rounds.
