What's Happening?
Richland Academy of the Arts is introducing a new series of workshops called StrongHER TogetHER, aimed at supporting female athletes aged 12-18 and their female guardians. The program consists of five
workshops focusing on leadership, physical wellness, mental health, nutrition, anxiety, and relationship-building. These sessions are scheduled to occur on Saturdays from 2-5 p.m. at the academy in Mansfield, with the first session on February 7. The initiative is funded by a grant from the Women's Fund of the Richland County Foundation, making it free for participants who reside in Richland County. The workshops will be led by mental health professionals, including Amanda Miller, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and Jacy Warrick, a licensed professional clinical counselor and registered art therapist.
Why It's Important?
This program addresses the growing need for mental health support among young female athletes, who often face significant stress and challenges both in sports and their personal lives. By providing a platform for education and discussion, the workshops aim to equip participants with tools to manage stress and improve their overall well-being. The involvement of mental health professionals and other experts ensures that the program offers comprehensive support, potentially leading to better mental health outcomes for participants. This initiative reflects a broader societal recognition of the importance of mental health, particularly in youth sports, and could serve as a model for similar programs nationwide.
What's Next?
The workshops are designed to be standalone, allowing participants to attend any or all sessions. This flexibility may encourage more participants to engage with the program. As the sessions progress, feedback from participants could lead to adjustments or expansions of the program. Additionally, the success of this initiative might inspire other organizations to develop similar programs, further promoting mental health awareness and support for young athletes.
