What's Happening?
The Tennessee Department of Agriculture has announced the official designation of the Nine Lakes of East Tennessee as a federally recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA). This marks Tennessee's fourth AVA, further establishing the state as a leader
in the Southeast's wine industry. The designation highlights the unique qualities of East Tennessee's landscape and climate, creating new opportunities for farmers, wineries, and rural communities. The Nine Lakes AVA spans over 4,000 square miles across 14 counties, including 29 wineries and more than 230 acres of vineyards. The region's geology, soils, elevation, and climate provide ideal conditions for a diverse range of grape varieties. The designation is expected to boost tourism, attract agricultural investment, and enhance the visibility of Tennessee wines.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of the Nine Lakes of East Tennessee as an AVA is significant for the state's agricultural economy. It provides a stronger identity for the region in the wine marketplace, potentially increasing tourism and supporting local businesses. The AVA designation validates the quality of wines produced in the area and positions East Tennessee as a destination for wine enthusiasts. This could lead to increased visitor engagement and economic growth in the region. Additionally, the designation supports the competitiveness of Tennessee-grown specialty crops, including wine grapes, by providing a clearer connection between consumers and the origin of their wine.
What's Next?
Wineries in the Nine Lakes region planning to use the AVA designation on their labels must meet federal requirements, such as sourcing at least 85 percent of their grapes from within the AVA and obtaining a Certificate of Label Approval. The effective date for using the designation is April 23, 2026. As the region gains recognition, it is likely to attract more visitors and investment, further supporting the growth of the local wine industry. Industry leaders and local businesses are expected to capitalize on this opportunity to enhance the region's reputation and economic prospects.
