What's Happening?
Hunnu Air, a Mongolian airline, is planning to expand its fleet with Airbus narrowbody and widebody aircraft to enter the European market. The airline intends to lease two A321LRs and two A330-200s, with deliveries
expected from late 2027. These aircraft will enable Hunnu Air to launch services to Berlin and Budapest. However, potential delivery delays could push the arrival of these aircraft to the first quarter of 2028. Additionally, the airline is considering adding an A330-200 passenger-to-freighter aircraft around 2028. Currently, Hunnu Air operates two Embraer 195-E2s, which will be used for a new service to New Delhi starting in July 2026. The airline has experienced around 40% growth over the past four to five years but faces limitations due to Mongolia's short peak travel season.
Why It's Important?
Hunnu Air's expansion into the European market represents a significant strategic move for the airline, potentially increasing its international presence and competitiveness. By introducing larger aircraft capable of long-haul flights, the airline can tap into new markets and diversify its route offerings. This expansion could also enhance Mongolia's connectivity with Europe, benefiting tourism and business travel. However, the success of this plan depends on timely aircraft deliveries and the airline's ability to navigate the competitive European aviation market. The move also highlights the growing interest of Asian carriers in expanding their reach to Europe, which could lead to increased competition and potentially lower fares for consumers.
What's Next?
Hunnu Air will need to secure the necessary regulatory approvals and finalize leasing agreements for the new aircraft. The airline will also focus on marketing its new European routes to attract passengers and establish partnerships with European airports and travel agencies. Additionally, Hunnu Air plans to pursue ACMI opportunities to improve aircraft utilization during off-peak periods. The airline is also working towards obtaining IATA Operational Safety Audit certification, which could enhance its reputation and operational standards.
