What's Happening?
Morgan Lewis, in collaboration with the Boston Impact Initiative, The Boston Foundation, and the New England Impact Investing Initiative, is hosting a seminar titled 'The New Era of Philanthropy: Reframing Fiduciary Duty to Unlock Capital for Impact.'
The event aims to address how charitable institutions can strategically deploy capital to enhance their impact in a rapidly changing landscape. With philanthropic assets in the U.S. reaching record levels, the seminar will explore the challenges and opportunities in aligning these resources with mission-driven goals. Key topics include reframing fiduciary duty, using spending policy as a governance tool, and overcoming barriers to impact investing. The seminar will feature discussions led by Dimple Abichandani, author and philanthropic advisor, and other industry leaders.
Why It's Important?
The seminar is significant as it addresses the growing need for philanthropic organizations to adapt to the current socio-economic climate, where wealth inequality is increasing and social safety nets are diminishing. By exploring new frameworks for deploying capital, the event seeks to empower foundations and other charitable entities to maximize their impact. This is crucial as many institutions currently allocate only a small percentage of their endowments towards mission-driven activities, leaving a vast amount of resources underutilized. The discussions aim to provide practical tools and strategies for trustees and investment committees to navigate these challenges and enhance their governance and impact.
