What's Happening?
The travel and tourism sector has emerged as the fastest-growing sector globally in 2025, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). The sector's global GDP contribution reached a record $11.6 trillion, accounting for 9.8% of the global economy.
This growth rate of 4.1% significantly outpaced the overall global economic growth of 2.8%. The sector supported 366 million jobs worldwide, representing 10.9% of global employment, and accounted for one in three new jobs created globally. The Asia-Pacific region led the growth with an 8.1% increase in travel and tourism GDP, while North America experienced slower growth at 1.0%. The WTTC emphasizes the need for governments to recognize travel and tourism as a strategic priority and to implement policies that support growth, investment, and connectivity.
Why It's Important?
The exceptional growth of the travel and tourism sector highlights its critical role in global economic recovery and employment. The sector's ability to outpace global economic growth underscores its resilience and potential as a driver of economic expansion. The creation of millions of jobs worldwide demonstrates the sector's importance in supporting livelihoods and reducing unemployment. However, the uneven growth across regions, with Asia-Pacific leading and North America lagging, points to the need for targeted policies to address regional disparities. The sector's performance also emphasizes the importance of international connectivity and investment in infrastructure to sustain growth and enhance global travel experiences.
