What's Happening?
The NFL has announced the winners of the 2025 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award, recognizing Dylen Smith of Palisades Charter High School in California and Dave Ettinger of Garden City High School in New York. The award, named after the legendary coach Don Shula, honors high school football coaches who exemplify character, integrity, leadership, and dedication to their communities. Coach Smith led his team through significant adversity after fires destroyed their facilities, yet they achieved a perfect season. Coach Ettinger, nominated by the New York Giants, has maintained an impressive record over 11 years, leading his team to multiple championships. Both coaches will receive financial awards for their programs and will be
honored at the 2026 Pro Bowl and Super Bowl.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of high school coaches by the NFL underscores the critical role they play in shaping young athletes and fostering community spirit. These awards highlight the importance of leadership and resilience in sports, particularly in high school athletics, where coaches often serve as mentors and role models. The financial support provided to the winning programs can significantly enhance resources and opportunities for student-athletes, promoting the development of future talent. This initiative also reflects the NFL's commitment to community engagement and the promotion of football values at the grassroots level.
