What's Happening?
Ligue 1 Plus is set to become the sole broadcaster of France's top-flight football matches starting next season. This change follows beIN Sports' decision not to renew its contract for broadcasting the 'Ninth match,' traditionally the second-biggest game of the week. As a result, all Ligue 1 matches will be available exclusively on Ligue 1 Plus. This transition will also see an increase in the subscription price for Ligue 1 Plus, which will rise to €19.99. The move comes after DAZN's withdrawal from a previous broadcasting deal, citing unprofitability.
Why It's Important?
The consolidation of broadcasting rights under Ligue 1 Plus marks a significant shift in how French football is consumed. By centralizing the broadcast of all matches, Ligue 1 Plus aims to streamline
access for fans, potentially increasing viewership and subscription numbers. However, the price increase may pose a barrier for some fans, affecting overall accessibility. This development reflects broader trends in sports broadcasting, where digital platforms are increasingly taking over traditional broadcasters, reshaping the landscape of sports media consumption.
