What's Happening?
Ivanhoe Electric is set to acquire a Crossover XRE Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and a material handling system from the Robbins Company. This acquisition is intended to facilitate mine access development
at the Santa Cruz Copper Project in Arizona, USA. The TBM, previously used in Australia, will be refurbished and equipped with a 9.3m-diameter cutterhead. The project aims to enhance efficiency and safety during the decline development phase. The final purchase agreement is expected by the end of May 2026, with the TBM's arrival and assembly scheduled for early 2027.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of the TBM represents a significant investment in the Santa Cruz Copper Project, potentially boosting the local economy and creating jobs. By improving efficiency and safety, Ivanhoe Electric aims to position itself as a leader in underground copper production. The project could also set a precedent for future mining operations in the region, emphasizing the importance of advanced technology in resource extraction. Additionally, the involvement of the Export-Import Bank of the US in project financing highlights the strategic economic interests tied to domestic copper production.
What's Next?
With the TBM's implementation, Ivanhoe Electric plans to commence decline development in Q3 2027, followed by major surface infrastructure construction through 2028. Copper cathode production is anticipated to begin in Q2 2029. The company is advancing its project financing process and engaging with commercial banks and non-debt funding sources. The successful execution of this project could lead to further expansions, including the nearby Texaco Deposit, and influence future mining projects in the US.
