What's Happening?
NPR Music is commemorating Black Music Month with a special Tiny Desk concert series that honors the legacy of Black Entertainment Television (BET) in shaping Black music and culture. Starting June 2, the series will feature performances from 10 artists
across various genres and generations, including Bow Wow, Eve, Shaboozey, and more. The concerts will be available on NPR.org and NPR Music's YouTube channel. This marks the fifth year of Tiny Desk's tradition of celebrating Black music, highlighting BET's role as a pioneer in showcasing Black artists since the 1980s. BET icons Donnie Simpson, Big Tigger, and Bow Wow have joined NPR to announce the lineup on social media.
Why It's Important?
The collaboration between NPR's Tiny Desk and BET underscores the significant impact BET has had on American culture by providing a platform for Black artists when other networks did not. This celebration during Black Music Month highlights the ongoing importance of recognizing and elevating Black music and artistry. By honoring BET's legacy, NPR's Tiny Desk series not only pays tribute to past contributions but also continues to support the visibility and appreciation of Black musicians. This initiative reflects the broader cultural movement towards inclusivity and recognition of diverse voices in the music industry.
What's Next?
Throughout June, audiences can expect a series of unique performances that showcase the diversity and richness of Black music. The concerts will be accompanied by behind-the-scenes content and additional social media engagement, further amplifying the celebration of Black Music Month. This initiative may inspire other platforms to similarly honor and promote Black music and culture, potentially leading to more collaborations and events that highlight the contributions of Black artists.
