What's Happening?
Security Matters (SMX) and the European Center of Innovative Textiles (CETI) have introduced a new traceability tool for the textile industry. This tool embeds a chemical-based marker into fibers, allowing for audit-proof traceability from raw material
to end-of-life. The marker is tamper-proof and can be read with detector devices, linking to a blockchain-enabled platform for real-time verification. This technology aims to enhance supply chain transparency and ensure compliance with upcoming regulations, such as the European Union's Digital Product Passport, which mandates traceability and sustainability information for textiles.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of this traceability tool is crucial for the textile industry, which faces increasing pressure to ensure sustainability and combat counterfeiting. With the EU's Digital Product Passport regulation set to become mandatory in 2027, textile companies must adapt to new compliance requirements. The tool developed by SMX and CETI provides a solution that integrates seamlessly into existing production systems, offering brands a way to verify recycled content and meet regulatory standards. This advancement not only helps in reducing fraud but also supports the industry's shift towards more sustainable practices, potentially improving consumer trust and brand reputation.
