What's Happening?
JetBlue Airways is set to expand its transatlantic network by launching a new daily seasonal service from Boston Logan International Airport to Milan Malpensa Airport. This service, beginning on May 11, will be operated using Airbus A321neo aircraft.
The move marks JetBlue's entry into a market that recently regained nonstop service, with Delta Air Lines having launched seasonal flights in May 2025. JetBlue's new route will provide nearly 2,000 two-way weekly seats, accounting for about 46% of the market capacity alongside Delta's service. The airline aims to capitalize on the growing demand for travel between Boston and Milan, which saw 70,400 two-way passengers in the 12 months to June 2025.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of JetBlue's Boston-Milan route is significant as it enhances the airline's European footprint and increases competition in the transatlantic market. This expansion is part of JetBlue's broader strategy to leverage point-to-point demand and its extensive Boston network to sustain its transatlantic services. The move is expected to stimulate further growth in passenger traffic between the U.S. and Europe, benefiting travelers with more options and potentially lower fares. Additionally, JetBlue's increased capacity at Boston Logan positions it as a major player in the airport's transatlantic market, challenging Delta's dominance.
What's Next?
JetBlue plans to continue expanding its transatlantic offerings, with a total of 238,800 departure seats from Boston on European routes for summer 2026. This growth strategy includes increasing its market share at Boston Logan and potentially introducing more routes to other European destinations. The airline's success in this venture could prompt further investments in its transatlantic services, potentially leading to new routes and increased frequency on existing ones.
