What's Happening?
Fred Kogel, the CEO of Leonine Studios, has had his contract extended until 2028 by the Mediawan Group, the parent company of Leonine Studios. This decision comes two years after Mediawan, a Paris-based pan-European content group, acquired Leonine Studios, having
previously held a 25% stake since 2020. Kogel, who founded Leonine Studios in 2019 alongside the international investment group KKR, has led the company to become one of the largest independent production and distribution entities in German-speaking Europe. Under his leadership, the studio has produced successful projects such as 'School of Magical Animals 2 & 3', 'Girl You Know It's True', and 'Weekend Rebels', the latter of which is set for a U.S. remake. Additionally, Quirin Berg will be appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Leonine Holding GmbH, and Jochen Köstler will join the Management Board as Chief Production Officer Non-Fiction.
Why It's Important?
The extension of Fred Kogel's contract signifies Mediawan Group's commitment to maintaining and expanding its influence in the European media landscape. Leonine Studios' growth under Kogel's leadership highlights the potential for further international collaborations and productions, which could enhance the company's market presence in the U.S. and beyond. This move aligns with Mediawan's strategy to become a global independent leader in content production and distribution, leveraging top-tier talent and a strong European vision. The continued collaboration between Mediawan and Leonine Studios is expected to foster synergies that could lead to more international projects, thereby strengthening the group's growth and competitive edge in the global media industry.
What's Next?
With the contract extension, Fred Kogel and his management team, including newly appointed Quirin Berg and Jochen Köstler, are expected to continue pursuing international projects and collaborations. Mediawan Group's CEO, Pierre-Antoine Capton, has expressed intentions to accelerate synergies across the group, suggesting that future projects like the U.S. adaptation of 'Weekend Rebels' could be on the horizon. The focus will likely be on developing more international content and expanding Leonine Studios' footprint in the global market, potentially leading to new partnerships and ventures that align with Mediawan's vision of becoming a global content champion.
