What's Happening?
SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) has inaugurated its Base Maintenance Malaysia (BMM) facility at Subang Airport, expanding its regional base maintenance network in Asia. The facility, which spans 590,000
square feet, includes two hangars capable of handling six aircraft checks simultaneously. It will focus on heavy maintenance, structural repairs, modifications, and retrofit work for widebody aircraft such as the Airbus A350, Boeing 777, and 787. The first aircraft serviced was a Singapore Airlines A350-900, inducted in November 2025 for C-checks. SIAEC's CEO, Chin Yau Seng, highlighted the potential for growth in Malaysia's aerospace sector, emphasizing talent development and technical capability.
Why It's Important?
The opening of the BMM facility signifies SIAEC's strategic expansion in the Southeast Asian aerospace market, which is poised for growth. This move enhances SIAEC's ability to support its customers and strengthens its presence in Malaysia, a country with significant potential in aerospace talent and industry growth. The facility's focus on widebody aircraft maintenance positions SIAEC to capitalize on the increasing demand for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services in the region. This expansion could lead to increased employment opportunities and skill development in Malaysia's aerospace sector, contributing to the country's economic growth.
