What's Happening?
Vertical Aerospace has achieved a historic milestone by completing a two-way piloted transition flight with its eVTOL aircraft, Valo. This flight, conducted on April 14, 2026, marks the first time a full-scale
tiltrotor eVTOL has completed such a transition under civil aviation Design Organisation Approval regulatory oversight. The flight involved transitioning from vertical take-off to wing-borne cruise and back to vertical landing. This achievement is a significant step towards the certification and commercialization of Vertical's eVTOL technology, which aims to provide a new mode of urban transportation.
Why It's Important?
This milestone is crucial for the advancement of the eVTOL industry, as it validates the technology needed for electric air taxis. The successful transition flight demonstrates the potential for eVTOL aircraft to operate efficiently in urban environments, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional transportation methods. The achievement reinforces the UK's leadership in next-generation aerospace and supports high-skill job creation and export growth. It also highlights the collaborative efforts between Vertical Aerospace and regulatory bodies to ensure the highest safety standards in the development of eVTOL technology.
What's Next?
Vertical Aerospace is now focused on progressing towards the certification of its Valo aircraft, with plans to enter service by 2028. The company will continue its flight test program under the oversight of the UK Civil Aviation Authority and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Vertical Aerospace is also planning public flight demonstrations and further development of its hybrid-electric variant. The company aims to expand its manufacturing capabilities and produce pre-production Valo aircraft for compliance and verification testing.
